October 7th - 10th 2010
Silverstream Retreat
If we carry on
building more prisons, having people serve longer sentences,
see more families get affected both as victims of crime and
of the overall justice system, then the wellbeing of our
country suffers- and we all lose out.
This is a complex area, no-one has all the answers, and we
need to collaborate together to help build a justice system
we can be proud of as New Zealander's.
We welcomed the input of international leaders who examine
and think about criminal justice in other countries, but we
also welcomed those of you – whoever you are- who work with
people daily in various parts of New Zealand affected by
crime.
Together at this conference/hui we aspired to leave
behind our prejudices and fears and korero together to find
solutions to some of our intractable problems; we will
present these to our Government and continue on to see how
we can change direction and together break down the barriers
to getting prison numbers down.
We challenged you to come not only to listen and discuss
these major issues with your colleagues but also to
genuinely see if you could partner together with other
agencies , academic institutions, businesses, government
departments etc to make a real difference to our society in
the years to come…let the barriers truly come down between
us! |

Our
very successful conference is now over and the work we are
involved in continues with a greater focus and
determination.
